You can apply if you’re a Commonwealth citizen, a British overseas citizen, a British overseas territories citizen, a British national (overseas), or a citizen of Zimbabwe. You must be 17 or over and able to support yourself without public funds.
You must have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or in what is now Ireland before 31 March 1922. Claims can be made through adoption or if your parents/grandparents were not married. Step-parents cannot be considered for UK ancestry.
Yes, they can apply as your ‘dependants’. This includes your partner and children under 18 or those over 18 who were previously dependants on your or your partner’s visa.
For your partner, you need to prove a recognized marriage/civil partnership or a 2- year cohabitation relationship. For your child, you must demonstrate that they live with you, are not married or in a civil partnership, and are supported without public funds.
If applying from outside the UK, they must apply online and provide biometric information. If extending or switching visas within the UK, they must apply before their current visa expires.
Dependants cannot switch to this visa if they are in the UK on certain types of visas, such as visitor visas or domestic worker visas. In these cases, they must apply from outside the UK.
They do not automatically become British citizens. You must apply for their dependant visa before they turn 18, especially if you plan to travel in and out of the UK with your child.
They can work (except as a sportsperson or coach), study, travel abroad and return to the UK, and apply for indefinite leave to remain after 5 years, subject to eligibility. They cannot access most public funds or the State Pension.
