The Student Visa replaces the previous Tier 4 (General) Student Visa and applies to those pursuing various levels of education, including degree-level and below-degree-level courses. The length of stay in the UK depends on the course's level and duration, with options for extensions and further visa switches, such as to a Graduate Visa, once the studies are completed.

When to Apply
- Applying from Outside the UK: You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts. A decision is usually made within 3 weeks.
- Applying from Inside the UK: You can apply up to 3 months before your course starts. You must apply before your current visa expires, and your new course must start within 28 days of your current visa expiration. A decision is typically made within 8 weeks.

Visa Duration
- For courses at degree level or above, you can stay for up to 5 years.
- For courses below degree level, the maximum stay is 2 years.
- Eligibility for visa extensions, switching to a Student or Graduate visa, and staying longer depends on individual circumstances.
Travel to the UK
- If your course lasts 6 months or less, you can arrive up to 1 week before it begins.
- If your course lasts more than 6 months, you can arrive up to 1 month before the course starts. You must not travel to the UK before the start date on your visa.
