If you want to study, complete research, or take exams in the UK for a short period, the Standard Visitor Visa allows you to stay for up to 6 months .
As a Standard Visitor, you can study in the UK for up to 6 months, as long as your activities meet the visitor rules. You can:
You’re allowed to:
Study at an accredited UK institution (including English language courses)
Join a short study programme connected to your course abroad
Complete intensive face-to-face sessions
Attend induction weeks
Take exams or assessments
You may carry out a short piece of research in the UK if:
You are 16 years or older
You’re enrolled in a course overseas equivalent to a UK degree
A UK higher education institution has formally accepted you for research relevant to your overseas studies
You can also:
Undertake an elective placement in medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, or veterinary studies
Join an unpaid clinical attachment if you’re a medical, dental, or nursing graduate
Sit the OSCE or PLAB tests
Important: You must not treat patients during electives or clinical attachments.
To come to the UK for study under the Standard Visitor route, you must show:
You meet the basic Standard Visitor requirements
Your activities fit within the allowed study categories
You can support yourself financially during your stay
You will leave the UK at the end of your visit
You have been accepted onto a course or programme at an accredited institution
If you are visiting to study a short course in the UK, your programme must be delivered by a fully accredited institution. Courses must last no longer than six months, except in distance-learning scenarios. You must show a valid acceptance letter, course outline, and information confirming your attendance dates.
Distance-learning students may visit the UK for short in-person sessions such as:
Intensive blocks of teaching
Practical assessments
Examinations
Orientation sessions
Supervised workshops
The majority of their academic programme must remain outside the UK
If your studies will last longer than six months, the Study Visit Visa is not suitable. You must apply under the appropriate long-term category such as:
Short-term Study Visa – for English language courses up to 11 months
Student Visa – for degree-level courses or courses at licensed sponsors
Child Student Visa – for independent school students aged 4 to 17

Electives in medicine, veterinary medicine and science, nursing, midwifery, or dentistry are allowed. Your visit can last up to 6 months.
Yes, if you are an overseas graduate from a medical, dental or nursing school, you can visit for up to 6 months to do an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post. However, you must not treat patients.
Yes, you can visit the UK for up to 6 months to take the OSCE or PLAB test. If you do not pass the PLAB test, you can apply to stay for a further 6 months to retake the test. If you pass, you can apply to stay in the UK to do an unpaid clinical attachment or dental
observer post for up to 18 months.
You’ll need to provide confirmation from your overseas course provider, a letter from the Nursing and Midwifery Council confirming your OSCE test registration or a letter from the General Medical Council confirming your PLAB test registration, depending on your circumstances.
