Visit the UK as an Academic

For Senior Doctors and Dentists
If you are a senior medical professional, additional activities are permitted. You may:
Conduct or contribute to research projects in the UK
Take part in teaching activities (as long as it’s not a permanent teaching post)
Participate in clinical practice, provided the role is not permanent
ATAS Certificate Requirements

Paid Engagements for Academics
If you have been invited to the UK for a specific engagement — such as delivering a lecture, participating as an academic assessor, or attending a specialist event — you may qualify under the Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) route.
To be eligible, you must demonstrate recognised expertise in your field.
Short Visits (Up to 6 Months)
If you plan to stay for up to six months, you must:

Staying Longer Than 6 Months
All academic visits longer than six months require a Standard Visitor visa, regardless of nationality.
You can choose to:
Apply before travelling
A Standard Visitor visa of up to 12 months costs £220.
Or extend your stay inside the UK
You may enter for up to six months and extend your stay to a total of 12 months by paying £1,100.
To stay longer than six months, you must show:
You are highly qualified in your academic field (usually PhD level or higher)
You currently work in that field at an overseas academic institution
You are not taking up a permanent teaching role
Senior doctors and dentists must also prove they are visiting for research, teaching (non-permanent), clinical practice, or a formal academic exchange.

If your visit is up to 6 months, you should check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements for a Standard Visitor and whether you need a visa.
For academic visits lasting longer than 6 months, regardless of nationality, you must apply for a Standard Visitor visa. You have two options: apply for a visa that lasts up to 12 months before traveling to the UK, or visit for up to 6 months and apply to extend your stay for a fee of £1000 (up to a total of 12 months).
To stay longer than 6 months, you must demonstrate that you are highly qualified in your field, currently employed in that field at an academic institution overseas, and not occupying a permanent teaching position. Additional requirements will apply based on your academic role.
You may need to provide supporting documents such as a letter from your employer outlining the dates of your sabbatical or exchange, a letter outlining the research to be undertaken, or confirmation from the UK host organization regarding the arrangements for your research, exchange, or clinical practice. Depending on your country of origin, you may also need a tuberculosis (TB) certificate.
