Overview of the BNO Visa for British Nationals Overseas

British nationals (overseas) from any part of the world, including Hong Kong, can explore the BNO visa opportunity for themselves and their family members. If you’re an offspring of a British national (overseas), born on or after 1 July 1997 and aged 18 or older, you possess the eligibility to apply independently of your parents. Additionally, family members can be included in this application. Applicants can initiate the BNO visa process from outside the UK. However, it’s wise to await your application’s decision before setting foot in the UK.

BNO Visa Eligibility Criteria

1. Here’s a breakdown of who can apply:

2. Applicants must be 18 years or older.

3. You either identify as a British national (overseas) or are the child of one, born post 1 July 1997.

FAQs

Family members eligible for the BNO visa typically need to apply concurrently with the main applicant, except if they're a partner or child under 18. Eligibility extends to direct relations and certain dependent adults.

You can choose between a 2 years and 6 months visa or a 5 years visa. Once in the UK, you can extend as often as needed. After 5 years, permanent UK residency is attainable.

You can work (except as a professional sportsperson/sports coach) and study. You're initially not eligible for most public funds, but under certain circumstances, you might access benefits.

The visa application fee is £180 for 2.5 years and £250 for 5 years. All applicants must also pay the healthcare surcharge.

Adults pay £1,560 for 2.5 years or £3,120 for 5 years. Children pay £1,175 for 2.5 years or £2,350 for 5 years. This grants access to the NHS, with exceptions like dental care and prescriptions.

Yes, first-time applicants need to prove sufficient funds for 6 months, considering housing and daily living expenses. Amounts vary based on family size. If you've lived in the UK for 12 months or more, there's an exception.

Adult dependents include certain direct relations living with the main applicant. They should be highly dependent due to factors like illness, disability, or age. They must apply concurrently with the main applicant.

Family members get the same visa duration as the main applicant, either 2.5 years or 5 years, with extension options. They can also apply for permanent UK residency after 5 years.

Each family member must individually apply as a dependent. The main applicant must first apply to receive an application number, which family members will use. Group applications can also be linked for faster processing.

Partners and children under 18 don't need to apply simultaneously. Other family members should apply within 2 days of the main applicant.
