The UK Family Reunion Visa Suspension announced on 4 September 2025 has left many refugee families uncertain about their future.
As of 4 September 2025, the UK Government has suspended the Family Reunion visa route for refugees. This visa previously allowed individuals with refugee status in the UK to reunite with family members by sponsoring them to join them here.

With this change, refugees must now apply under alternative UK visa categories—many of which have strict requirements such as minimum income, accommodation standards, and English language ability. This can make reuniting with family in the UK far more difficult and time-consuming.
The government has indicated that a new version of the Family Reunion visa may be introduced in spring 2026, but it is likely to come with tougher eligibility criteria.

While the main Family Reunion visa is temporarily unavailable, there are still a few options that may be suitable depending on your situation:
1. Family Visa Applications – Appendix FM Route
You can apply to bring your spouse, partner, or children under the Appendix FM immigration rules. To qualify, you usually need to:
Earn at least £29,000 per year
Provide suitable accommodation
Prove your family member has A1 level English
✅ Exception: If you don’t meet all the requirements, the Home Office must still consider your application if there are exceptional circumstances that would cause unjustifiably harsh consequences if the application were refused.
2. Unaccompanied Children Visa UK
If a child has no parent or legal guardian to care for them in their home country, they may be able to join a refugee family member in the UK.
Requirements include:
A qualifying family relationship
Evidence of financial support and suitable accommodation
Again, the Home Office must consider genuine family life and compassionate grounds where strict criteria aren’t fully met.
3. Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) Visa
You may be able to sponsor an elderly or disabled adult family member under the Adult Dependent Relative visa if:
They require long-term personal care due to illness or age
This care is unavailable or unaffordable in their home country
You can provide adequate accommodation and financial support
As with other routes, exceptions apply where refusing the visa would lead to harsh or unjust outcomes.
